General Skills
Throughout the bachelor of policing degree I have further developed my oral communication skills, high quality writing skills and especially my research skills. This degree has allowed me to understand the importance of everyday skills and the benefits of attaining them. This is conveyed through my current job in after school care. Time management, team responsibilities and understanding different perspectives are all skills I incorporate in both university and after school care. Through my sport volunteer work I have developed a high sense of independence and patience allowing myself to remain calm in stressful situations. Each of the skills I have attained through my experiences, all correlate with one another.
Specialised Skills
My degree, (bachelor of policing) has allowed me to attain a specialised set of skills and knowledge. With so much content discussed and research studied, I can understand and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the different measures of social change, which is a key component within the NSW police force. I have obtained a critical understanding of duty of care I must portray towards both victims and offenders. I have also gained an articulate and appropriate understanding of caution, arrest, and use of force, custody and offender management. All of these skills are specialised for my future profession and prepare me in regards of what to expect when accepted.
Community funding/Social Enterprise Application Development
Grant application or proposal normally request funding to support activities that are consistent with that organisations aim. Often these grant proposals are designed to target community needs and provide programs that offer grants to help to other organisations. Throughout this Degree I have developed the skills and knowledge to identify communities in need that experience current social issues. This is conveyed through a community grant funding project, and my ability to identify the Blacktown district as a community at risk of experiencing or witnessing domestic violence. Our project targets five high schools and aims to educate students through engaging and innovative activities. Funding is required to support our project and has thus, through extensive analysis on statistics and data, resulted in our selection of the Department of Social Services as our funding body. The department of Social Services aim to reduces domestic violence among young people and reduce criminal justice issues facing youth today as a whole.
Applied Debating Developing Position Papers
An applied debate is conducted on ideas, issues and subjects in which the advocates have a particular special interest, the debate is addressed to a judge or audience with the power to make a definitive decision on the proposal or to answer the question or the subject in a real way. Writing the position paper has provided myself with skills, such as critical thinking, ability to analyse arguments and compare and contrast opposing opinions, to select a side and argue why it a stronger position.
